Columbarium

COLUMBARIUM FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. What is a Columbarium?

A columbarium is a structure designed to hold cremated human remains (cremains) in urns. The term "columbarium" comes from the Latin word "columba," meaning dove, which symbolizes the Holy Spirit and peace. Columbariums have been used for centuries to store cremated remains.

2. What is the Vatican’s position on Cremation?

The Vatican says that cremated remains are to be treated reverently and reposed in a consecrated space where there is perpetual care, and complete records maintained. This shows respect for our deceased family members, eases the bereavement process and affirms the unique dignity of each person and our belief in the resurrection of the body. Fulfilling these requirements, the Columbarium Peace Garden on the beautiful and sacred grounds of the Shrine of St. Joseph is a fitting and dignified resting place for all Catholics.

3. Who may use the Columbarium at Saint Joseph Shrine?

The Columbarium at the Saint Joseph Shrine is reserved for Catholics and their Catholic & non-Catholic spouses and/or descendants and extended families.

5. What are the advantages of choosing a shrine or church columbarium as opposed to a cemetery?

This is a personal choice. Many people choose to be buried in a columbarium at a shrine or church, because of a strong desire to be laid to rest because they loved and served. Those who choose to be placed in a columbarium at a shrine or church often are attracted by its religious focus and the nearness to the community they love. The proximity makes it convenient for visits by loved ones and for periods of meditation and reflection. Also, the fee for being placed in one of the niches is usually less than the cost of interment in a cemetery. Other factors that may influence your decision to choose interment in a columbarium are concerns about the environment, and space availability in a family plot at the cemetery.

6. How are the Columbarium niches assigned?

Niches are assigned in the order that applications and deposits are received. Applicants may designate their preference for an available niche on their application. If the designated niche is unavailable, the application will be approved subject to the selection of an available niche.

7. What is the cost of a niche?

The cost of a niche varies depending on the wall location on the grounds, and placement within the wall itself (for example, niches located at eye level are typically more expensive compared to ones that are higher or lower). Please contact the Shrine office or refer to the latest Columbarium Niche Pricing document on the website.

6. Can I purchase a niche in advance (pre-need)?

Yes, you can purchase a niche in advance, even if you do not need it immediately. This is known as a "pre-need" purchase. Note: Payments for other items and services (i.e., engraving, urns, funeral Mass, Committal services, etc.), are only paid for at the time of commitment.

7. Can I transfer or assign my niche to someone else?

No, niche ownership cannot be transferred after purchase.

8. How are the urns for cremated remains obtained?

The urns for cremated remains may be purchased from the Shrine of St. Joseph, from an outside funeral home, or retailer provided they meet the following sizing standards: Individual urns are limited to a maximum height of 10.5". The diameter of a single round urn should not exceed 6”. Individual rectangular urns should not exceed a depth of 11", nor a width of 5.5". Our 12”x12” niches will accommodate a maximum of 2 urns.

9. What is the process for placing cremated remains in a niche?

The Shrine office should be notified of the death of an eligible person for whom a Columbarium niche has been purchased. A Certificate of Cremation and a Report for Final Disposition of a Human Corpse and Out-of-State Burial Transit Permit must be provided to the Shrine office before placement of the cremains. The funeral home or crematorium can assist in obtaining these documents.

10. Can memorial services be held at the Columbarium?

Yes, Funeral Masses, Committal, or memorial services may be held at the Columbarium or in the chapel at the discretion and approval of the clergy of the Shrine of St. Joseph. Please contact the Shrine office for more information.

11. How is the Columbarium maintained?

The Columbarium is the property of Missionary Servants of the Most Holy Trinity and will be maintained by the Shrine of Saint Joseph and a Columbarium fund administered by a Shrine office appointed by the Missionary Servants. There are no annual maintenance costs to the Columbarium niche owners after the initial purchase.
